    Greetings!

         The upcoming elections are a great way to teach our children good citizenship. (See articles below.)
    * Explain how our government works.
    * Be an example by your involvement in the election.
    * Pray together as a family for our nation.

         Reformation Day is an opportunity for us as Christian home educators to teach our children about an important event in church and world history and to explore its spiritual significance to us today.

         As with any home education studies, there are academic and spiritual aspects to explore in these topics.

         May the Lord bless your family for His glory!

    Sincerely,
    Sue Welch

    Pray for Our Nation

    I exhort therefore, that, first of all,
         supplications, prayers, intercessions,
         and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

    For kings, and for all that are in authority;
         that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life
         in all godliness and honesty.

    For this is good and acceptable
         in the sight of God our Savior;
         Who will have all men to be saved,
         to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
         (I Timothy 2:1-4)

    * Pray that godly men will run for office.
    * Pray that Christians in government will follow biblical
         principles and be protected from Satan's attacks.
    * Pray that Christians will have wisdom and diligence
         in voting and other political action.
    * Pray that all Christians will vote.
    * Pray that integrity will prevail in the voting process.
    * Thank God for the freedom we enjoy, and for the privilege
         of electing our leaders.

    Don't Forget To Vote November 5!

         The upcoming November elections will not only decide the majority of both the House and Senate, they will also determine the future direction of our country.
         The representatives chosen in these elections will decide on several important issues including the appointments of Federal judges and the replacement of two Supreme Court Justices.

    Vote
    * If you have mail-in ballots, try to vote a few days before
         the deadline so that no unforeseen circumstances will
         prevent you from voting.
    * The United States is governed by us, "the people."
         God says, "He that ruleth, [let him do it] with
         diligence" (Rom. 12:8). Since we as citizens "rule" the
         country, this verse applies to us.

    Reformation Day: October 31

         October 31st is the anniversary of Martin Luther posting his 95 Theses on the church door in Wittenberg, Germany.

         Luther "rediscovered" and preached the Gospel -- the good news that God is loving and merciful, that He offers us forgiveness and salvation not because of what we do, but because of what Christ has already done for us.

         "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast" (Eph. 2:8, 9).

         "Civilization and the Protestant Reformation," an excellent online article, begins,

         "Civilization as we know it began a few minutes before noon, October 31, 1517.

         "In the small east German town of Wittenberg, a 34-year-old Augustinian priest walked to Castle Church and nailed 95 theological propositions for debate on the door.

         "The debate Martin Luther began nearly 500 years ago turned the world upside down. Democracy, civil rights and liberties, constitutional government, religious liberty, and the free market all find their roots in the Reformation." Link.

         1. "A Night of Reformation". 170-page notebook contains a short play about Martin Luther plus instructions and illustrations for games, carnival booths, crafts, food, music, costumes, decorations, and art and writing projects.

    A Mighty Fortress Is Our God
    Words and Music by Martin Luther, 1529
    Translated by Frederic H. Hedge, 1853

         The most powerful hymn of the Reformation was Luther's "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," based on Psalm 46. This hymn was a source of strength and inspiration, even for those who were martyred for their convictions.
         "A Mighty Fortress" has been translated into almost every known language and is regarded as one of the noblest and most classic examples of Christian hymnody. It would be an excellent hymn for your family to memorize.

    A mighty fortress is our God,
         a bulwark never failing;
    Our helper He, amid the flood
         of mortal ills prevailing:
    For still our ancient foe
         doth seek to work us woe;
    His craft and power are great,
         and, armed with cruel hate,
    On earth is not his equal.

    Did we in our own strength confide,
         our striving would be losing;
    Were not the right Man on our side,
         the Man of God's own choosing:
    Dost ask who that may be?
         Christ Jesus, it is He;
    Lord Sabaoth, His Name,
         from age to age the same,
    And He must win the battle.

    And though this world, with devils filled,
         should threaten to undo us,
    We will not fear, for God hath willed
         His truth to triumph through us:
    The Prince of Darkness grim,
         we tremble not for him;
    His rage we can endure,
         for lo, his doom is sure,
    One little word shall fell him.

    That word above all earthly powers,
         no thanks to them, abideth;
    The Spirit and the gifts are ours
         through Him Who with us sideth:
    Let goods and kindred go,
         this mortal life also;
    The body they may kill:
         God's truth abideth still,
    His kingdom is forever.

         Jed, 6, Tirzah, 4, and I went to our town's cemetery to do some gravestone rubbings with paper and crayons. As I began to rub and the stone's image appeared, Jed got excited and said, "Look, Mom, it's scanning!"
