   GOAL #3
To Teach and Train Your Children
A mother has many duties, and the urgent (physical
needs and crises) should not overshadow the important
(spiritual training, character development, and education).

Spiritual Training

1.  Knowledge of Scripture That Leads to Salvation

Teach your children the truths of the whole Bible, starting
in Genesis with creation and ending in Revelation with the new
heaven and earth.
Introduce your children to the Lord Jesus through His own
words and actions in the Gospels to lead your children to the
Lord so that they may accept His salvation.

"But Jesus said, 'Let the children alone,
          and do not hinder them from coming to Me;
for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.'"
          Matthew 19:14

"And that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures,
which are able to make you wise for salvation
through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God,
and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof,
for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
That the man of God may be complete,
thoroughly equipped for every good work."
          II Timothy 3:15-17

 *  Pray that your children will accept the Lord as their Savior
as soon as they are able and that you will know when and how
to talk to them about salvation.

 *  At the right time speak to your child about his need of a
Savior and how he can personally accept the Lord Jesus Christ.

2.  Love and Obedience to the Lord
Teach your children to love and obey the Lord by helping
them get to know Him and what He tells them to do in His Word.

 *  Schedule regular Bible reading and discussion -- more than
once a day if possible.  For example, read a Psalm at the
breakfast table, work on a memory verse after lunch, and have
     family Bible reading with Father.

 *  As soon as your child can read, encourage him to read from
God's Word on his own at a certain time each day.  (You could
have him read it aloud to you for a while until he establishes
     the habit.)

 *  Model Bible reading by letting your children see or know
when you are reading God's Word.

 *  Most importantly, show that you love God and desire to know
Him better and respond to His message to you.  Your attitude
     will make a life-long impression.

 *  Pray for your children's spiritual growth and strength
     throughout their lives.

3.  Obedience and Honor for Parents
Teach your children to honor and obey their father and
mother in obedience to the Lord so that they will receive His
blessing of a long and good life.
You might be tempted to think that it is self-serving to
teach your children to obey and honor you, but it is for their
benefit.  You do yourself, your children, and their future
families a grave disservice if you do not teach and require
obedience and respect.

 *  Teach your child what God says about obeying and honoring
their parents.  (Exodus 20:12; Ephesians 6:1-3)

 *  Have your children memorize pertinent verses.  For example,
"Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well
pleasing to the Lord." (Colossians 3:20)

 *  Discuss ways of honoring parents in word and deed.

 *  Model honoring your own parents by your actions and words,
even if they live far away or are no longer living.

"I like to remember my parents who are in heaven now, by
talking about them on their birthdays and Mother's and Father's
days.  I tell our children different things about them as I think
of them throughout the year as well." -- Sue W.

4.  Discipline and Training
The discipline and training of our children are clearly
ordained by God as duties of both parents.

"My son, observe the commandment of your father
and do not forsake the teaching of your mother."
          Proverbs 6:20

"The rod and reproof give wisdom,
but a child who gets his own way
          brings shame to his mother."
          Proverbs 29:15

 *  Establish child discipline and training in agreement with
     your husband.

 *  Study what God says about requiring obedience and then
present to your children a set of clear rules along with reasons
     and consequences.

 *  See "10 Elements of Child Training" at

"What the Bible Says about Child Training," is an excellent
book by J. Richard Fugate.  Also available is a video set, an
audio set, and a Spanish translation. For ordering information and
excerpts see

Scripture to the discipline and training of your children.

Home schooling is an excellent way to follow God's command:

"You shall teach them diligently to your sons
and shall talk of them when you sit in your house
and when you walk by the way
and when you lie down and when you rise up."
          Deuteronomy 6:7

Advantages of Home Education

 *  All subjects can be taught from a Christian perspective.

 *  The superior teaching method of one-on-one tutoring can
     produce excellent results.

 *  You can provide moral, spiritual, and physical protection
     for your children.

 *  Your children will have opportunity for independent study
     of their interests.

Goals of a Good Christian Education

 *  Ability to read and understand God's Word (phonics, reading).

 *  Enabling your child to serve the Lord and others (including
his future family) more effectively (math, life and job skills).

 *  Giving him more appreciation of the Lord's working in nature
     (science) and nations (history).

 *  Gaining the ability to tell forth the Gospel and proclaim
God's Word (speech, writing, art, music).

 *  Concentrate on the basics: reading, writing, and math.

 *  Consider teaching subjects such as science, history, and
Bible to all of your children together with individual
     assignments on their own levels.

 *  A solid Christian curriculum can save you a lot of work
putting together your own, but you can feel free to skip or
rearrange some parts and incorporate a variety of other methods
     and materials as well.

 *  Inspire your children to enjoy and be excited about learning
together.  Motivation is the wind in your sails to move you
     along faster and easier.

   GOAL #4
To Care for the Physical Needs
   of Your Family
The physical needs of your family can be
overwhelming, but organization and perspective
will bring them into your control.  We can serve
these physical needs of our family as unto the Lord.

"Then the righteous will answer Him, saying,
'Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You,
or thirsty and give You drink?
When did we see You a stranger and take You in,
          or naked and clothe You?
Or when did we see You sick, or in prison,
          and come to You?'
And the King will answer and say to them,
          'Assuredly, I say to you,
inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these
My brethren, you did it to Me.'"
          Matthew 25:37-40

It is not impossible for you to become the model wife as
presented in Proverbs 31 if you:

1.  Are good and virtuous, loving and obeying the Lord.

2.  Are trustworthy and loving to your husband.

3.  Are a willing and hard worker in managing and cleaning your
house (organization and children's chores help too).

4.  Manage and live well within your budget.

5.  Make yourself strong and healthy (many of us need to lose
weight to be able to serve our family better and longer).

6.  Give to the poor and needy.

7.  Provide adequate clothing for your family (sewing or thrift
     stores help the budget).

8.  Speak with wisdom and kindness in teaching your children and
     younger women (see below).

   GOAL #5
To Teach Others To Be Godly
   Wives and Mothers
God also tells the older women to teach the
younger mothers to love their husbands and children
(Titus 2:3-5).  This would include teaching our own daughters
to be godly wives and mothers -- by word and example.

"My mother is a woman of few words and I have learned that
'you can say more by not saying anything at all.'  I wish I had
the self-control to hold my tongue as she does." -- Kathryn H.

"Polished Cornerstones" offers hundreds of ideas for Bible
study, reading, and everyday activities to help prepare your
daughters for godly womanhood.

"Keepers at Home" is a program providing a system for
children (at home or in a group) to learn new home and family
skills, with an emphasis on Christian values.

Help and Support
You cannot become a godly mother in your own strength,
but our loving Lord will give the wisdom and strength needed
for this task if we call upon Him for help!

"But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God,
who gives to all generously and without reproach,
and it will be given to him."  James 1:5

"We have not ceased to pray for you and to ask
that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will
in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,
So that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord,
to please Him in all respects,
Bearing fruit in every good work
          and increasing in the knowledge of God;
     Strengthened with all power,
          according to His glorious might,
     For the attaining of all steadfastness and patience;
Joyously giving thanks to the Father!"
     Colossians 1:9-12
