    Your Child's Health Assessments
Summer is a good time for home-school families to conduct health assessments for their children (that would otherwise be done for them in the public schools).
Your child's health, hearing, and vision greatly affect his ability to learn, and an ounce of prevention truly is worth a pound (or more) of cure!

    General Fitness
Measure and record your child's weight and height and chart his growth. Observe and note your child's overall appearance, activity, strength, balance, and flexibility.
Schedule a check-up visit with your health care provider if you have any questions.

    Hearing
All children develop communication skills at a different rate, but parents should pay attention to speech, language, and hearing milestones and take action if they suspect a problem.
Sudden, excessive, or continued loud noises, including video games or loud music, especially with headphones, can permanently damage your child's hearing.
    http://www.lhh.org/noise/prevent.htm
Early identification of hearing problems may enable developing problems to be corrected by treatment that would be ineffective or less effective if delayed. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association recommends that hearing should be tested by age 5, and again at ages 6, 7, 8, 13, and 17, or at any time there is a question or concern regarding your child's hearing such as poor response to noise or voice, slow language or speech development, or abnormal sounding speech.
    http://www.asha.org/hearing/testing/#schoolage

    Vision
Vision is a key factor in the learning process. Vision is more than clarity of seeing; it is the ability to visualize, understand and apply the information that comes through the eyes. Children with 20/20 sight may not have these abilities. Therefore, learning problems are often related to vision problems such as eye movement, eye teaming, and visual form perception problems.
Information about children's vision development, basic vision skills needed for school work, and symptoms that may indicate your child has a vision or visual processing problem is supplied by the American Optometric Association and the Optometric Extension Program Foundation on the following websites:

Protect your child's eyes with regular eye exams (every two years), sun glasses with UV protection, safety glasses to protect from hazards during work or sports. When reading or studying, make sure your child has proper lighting and good posture, takes breaks by refocusing on distant objects, and limits his total time of close work each day.
Computer Vision Center helps you overcome and prevent vision problems related to computer use.

    Dental/Oral Health
Helping your child develop good oral health habits should be a top priority. These include good nutrition, consistent cleaning, brushing, and flossing (by parent until child can do a good job, about 7 years old). Also include regular dental check-ups.
    http://www.ada.org/public/topics/parents/tips.html

    Spine
Scoliosis is an abnormal side-to-side curvature of the spine. Severe scoliosis puts pressure on the heart, diminishes lung capacity, and limits physical activity. An annual screening for Scoliosis and Kyphosis (round back) during the bone-growing years can make the difference between a preventable condition and disability in adult years.
You or your physician can perform a 30-second annual screening during these growing years. (See link below. Click on Resources; then "1 in Every 10 Have Scoliosis.") National Scoliosis Foundation

    Immunizations
Immunizations are controversial because of side effects that can and do occur. Explore both sides of the question: Centers for Disease Control

    Dear Teaching Home,
Thank you for offering a download on the "Questions & Answers Concerning Home Schooling."
I just finished talking to someone considering home schooling her children, and she is so full of anxiety. I was sitting here wishing I had a copy of your Q & A to give her. I decided I'd go to your website and order a copy and was delighted to see I could download one right away! I really felt God wanted me to send this young lady some encouragement, and in all my 13 years of home schooling, I haven't come across anything that does just that so well as your article. Thank you again, Pam Streeter.

    Who's Teaching Our Son?
    by Toria Michelle

    Who's teaching our son?
         And will they be near,
         When his heart is bruised,
And his eye holds a tear?
Will they know what to say,
              When he's needing to know,
              That he's God's special child,
Though the kids tease him so?

    Who's teaching our son?
         And what will they say,
         When the questions of life,
         Are asked them each day?
              Will they answer with truth,
Or have they been sold a lie?
              Which will they impart,
              Upon our little guy?

    Who's teaching our son?
         A new stranger each year?
         Can they really be trusted,
         With this treasure so dear?
              So why do we feel,
              We must send him away?
              It's what we've been told,
But . . . what does God say?

    Who's teaching our son?
         About love, faith, and hope?
         Who's training him up,
In the way he should go?
              ABC, 123,
              All of these he'll command.
              But does he know Jesus;
              Solid ground will he stand?

    Who's teaching our son?
         The answer now clear.
         Each morn as we rise,
Our dear boy we'll draw near!
              God's Word as our guide;
              His strength day by day;
              We'll teach our son,
              The truth and the way!

    Deuteronomy 6:4-7
Hear, O Israel ! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one!
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart
and with all your soul and with all your might.
These words, which I am commanding you today,
         shall be on your heart.
You shall teach them diligently to your sons
and shall talk of them when you sit in your house
and when you walk by the way
         and when you lie down
         and when you rise up.

Sunny Side Up: A Capital Idea
While we were waiting for our food at a restaurant, I decided to quiz our children to pass the time.
I asked, "What is the capital of Florida?"
My 5-year-old replied, "Is it F?"

    God Loves You.
Because we were separated from God by sin, Jesus Christ died in our place, then rose to life again. If we trust Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord, He will give us eternal life.
