Christ, the Lord,
Is Risen Today

by Charles Wesley, 1739

Christ, the Lord,
    is risen today, Alleluia!

Sons of men
    and angels say, Alleluia!

Raise your joys
    and triumphs high, Alleluia!

Sing, ye heavens,
    and earth, reply, Alleluia!

Love's redeeming work
    is done, Alleluia!

Fought the fight,
    the battle won, Alleluia!

Lo! the Sun's
    eclipse is over, Alleluia!

Lo! He sets
    in blood no more, Alleluia!

Vain the stone,
    the watch, the seal, Alleluia!

Christ hath burst
    the gates of hell, Alleluia!

Death in vain
    forbids His rise, Alleluia!

Christ hath opened
    paradise, Alleluia!

Lives again
    our glorious King, Alleluia!

Where, O death,
    is now thy sting? Alleluia!

Once He died
    our souls to save, Alleluia!

Where thy victory,
    O grave? Alleluia!

Soar we now where
    Christ hath led, Alleluia!

Following our
    exalted Head, Alleluia!

Made like Him,
    like Him we rise, Alleluia!

Ours the cross,
    the grave, the skies, Alleluia!

What Sounds Like
Summer-Salt?

Our 4-year-old daughter, named Summer, was rolling on the floor and did a little tumble.

I said, "Good job!  You just did a somersault!"

She smiled and then helped her 2-year-old brother, Parker, who had his head on the floor, to also flip over.  "Yeah!" she cried.  "You just did a Parker-salt!"

God's Love for Us

Because we have been separated from God by sin, Jesus Christ died in our place, then rose to life again.  If we trust Him as our Savior and Lord, He will forgive our sin and give us eternal life.

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life."  (John 3:16)

"The Lord ... is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance." (II Peter 3:9)

Christ's Resurrection

1 Corinthians 15
(Excerpts)

Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand.

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.

After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also.

But if there is no resurrection of the dead, not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain.

Moreover we are even found to be false witnesses of God, because we testified against God that He raised Christ, whom He did not raise, if in fact the dead are not raised.

For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.

Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.

If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied.

But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep.

For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead.

For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.

For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet.

The last enemy that will be abolished is death.

But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, "Death is swallowed up in victory.

"O death, where is your victory?  O death, where is your sting?"

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.

Music: "Christ, the Lord, Is Risen Today"

Words written by Charles Wesley in 1739. Become acquainted with this great hymn of the faith and learn at least the first verse (see words in left column).

•  Print the piano music.

Apologetics

Stimulate your older children to think by examining and discussing one or more of these articles.

•  "10 Reasons To Believe Christ Rose from the Dead"

•  "Evidence for the Resurrection" by Josh McDowell

•  "Beyond Blind Faith" by Paul E. Little

•  "How Do We Know That Jesus Christ Really Rose from the Dead?"

Drama

•  View "The Hope," a free 80-minute online video of God's redemptive story from beginning to end (or just chapters 10-11).  It clearly explains how Jesus Christ was born and why – starting at the very beginning, at the dawn of Creation. Also read a review of "The Hope."

•  Read and act out the dramatic sketch "A Press Conference after the Resurrection."

Evangelism: Invite Someone to Church

Many people will go to church on Easter Sunday that would not at any other time. Take advantage of this to invite family, friends, or neighbors to attend with you (and hear the gospel message). Consider some of the following:

•  Send a hand-written letter of invitation and follow up with a telephone call.

•  Offer a ride.

•  Invite them to dinner with you after the service.

•  Pray before and after that they will be saved or renew their commitment to the Lord.
