Pluto & Mnemonics

A mnemonic is a memory aid, such as a first-letter mnemonic "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas."

In this example, the first letter of each word in the mnemonic corresponds with the first letter of each of the planets in order from the sun outward.

However, after tumultuous discussions at the general assembly of the International Astronomical Union in Prague, Czech Republic, several hundred astronomers have agreed for the first time on a definition of a planet and declared that Pluto is no longer a planet!

May we suggest that the mnemonic for remembering the planets be changed to "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos"!

Other Mnemonic Examples

 •  Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492.

 •  Spring ahead and fall back (set clocks forward 1 hour in the spring for Daylight Savings Time and set clocks back 1 hour in the fall).

 •  Never believe a lie (spelling aid).

 •  30 Days hath September, April, June, and November. All the rest have 31, except February.

That's a Good Question!
Our 8-year-old son, Seth, was doing his nightly Bible reading with his dad and sister.  They were reading in Genesis about the fall of man.  When Dad read about Adam returning to the dust of the earth, Seth questioned, "Does that mean Eve returned to a rib?"

Upcoming Elections: November 7

This important election will decide the control of congress and other vital issues in many states.  It is essential for Christians to take this opportunity to influence our culture in the following ways.

1.  Register To Vote
Make sure that all members of your family age 18 and above are registered to vote at your current address and urge the members of your church to do so also.
 •   Find your state's deadline for voter registration.

2.  Absentee Ballot
If you will not be able to make it to the polls on November 7, request an absentee ballot from your secretary of state.

3.  Pray
See daily prayer requests from the Center for Reclaiming America for Christ's National Prayer Force.

4.  Be Informed
Voter guides are now available for 17 states, and more will be added before the election.

5.  Encourage Your Pastor To Be Involved
The Alliance Defense Fund and the Family Research Council sent thousands of letters to churches, spelling out what's legal for congregations to do during an election season.
According to the letter, "Plainly stated, there is nothing in federal tax law to prevent a pastor from directly telling the congregation to support legislation that the church believes to be beneficial to the community.  On the other hand, IRS regulations do prohibit tax-exempt organizations, including churches, from endorsing candidates.  However, churches remain free to educate their congregations through distributing voter guides, registering voters, or hosting candidate forums."
 •   Read this letter, and then print it and give it to your pastor.

6.  Vote!

Prepare for Halloween Outreach

Tract Evangelism is an effective way to spread the Good News of God's love and offer of salvation to all.

The Halloween season has become the busiest time of the year for the American Tract Society.  ATS distributed over 3.9 million tracts in 2005 and will distribute over 4 million in 2006.  (Annually ATS, founded in 1825, distributes close to 30 million gospel tracts worldwide in over 91 languages.)

New Tracts for Halloween
ATS is offering a new tract for Halloween.  The glow-in-the-dark tract for children is offered with the suggestion that believers give these bright items out on what ATS calls "the darkest holiday of the year."

 •   For more tract evangelism ideas and resources see Newsletter #16.

October Is Clergy Appreciation Month

Clergy Appreciation Month is a reminder to thank your pastor and his family for the work, sacrificial dedication, and blessings they provide your family.

"Respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you."  1 Thessalonians 5:12

 •   Although you can do this often throughout the year, this can be a special occasion for your entire church to do it together.

 •   For your family, this can be as simple as a card, gift, meal, or other method of showing your appreciation.

 •   Home-school families, who often observe different standards and practices within the church, should be especially careful to let their minister know of their support and gratefulness.

See suggestions for celebrating Clergy Appreciation Month.

White Ribbon Against Pornography Week
October 29 through November 5

The White Ribbon Against Pornography is intended to educate the public about the extent of the pornography problem and about what can legally be done to fight back against the flood tide of obscenity.
See a detailed list of activities an individual or group can do during WRAP Week and during the year (select WRAP Campaign on the menu in the upper right-hand corner of the page).

 •   Order and wear a white ribbon lapel pin or place a white ribbon magnet on your car.

 •   If your state does not have a state law that prohibits obscenity, Morality in Media’s legal department can help draft a new or amended state obscenity law or, if the Sate Supreme Court has invalidated the law, an amendment to a state constitution.  Keep in mind that the Federal Obscenity Laws apply in each state!  (See notes on AK, HI, ME, MT, NM, OR, SD, VT, and WV.)

 •   Ask city, county, and state legislators to curb “sexually oriented businesses.”

 •   Make complaints to businesses that distribute or advertise pornography.

 •   Write letters to the editor.

 •   Find more information and resources including model letters, sample sermons, the porn problem and solutions, help for porn victims, addicts, and parents.

"Everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart."  Matthew 5:28

 •   Find Bible-collection locations in the Northwest and around the USA and Canada.  You can also mail Bibles.

 •   Find more information and promotion resources.

"So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I desire." Isaiah 55:11

See the Dead Sea Scrolls
and Artifacts from Israel

"Discovering the Dead Sea Scrolls" is a traveling exhibit appearing in various U.S. cities through 2008.
Regarded by many as one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century, these scrolls are more than 1,000 years older than the previously oldest Hebrew biblical manuscripts.
This is a rare chance for your family to see these amazing manuscripts.

Seattle, Washington, September 23 - January 4, 2007
Kansas City, Missouri, March 1 - June 1, 2007
San Diego, California, July 1, 2007 - January 4, 2008
Phoenix, Arizona, January 20 - May 1, 2008
Raleigh, North Carolina, July 1, 2008- January 4, 2009

Whether or not your family is able to attend an exhibit, you can find information about the scrolls, the Qumran library and community, maps, images of scroll fragments and their translation and explore the exhibit, item by item.

"From Abraham to Jesus" Exhibit
Another exhibit, "From Abraham to Jesus," began September 15 in Atlanta, Georgia.  It will travel to 28 cities before concluding in New Jersey December, 2008.
This exhibit features more than 350 sacred texts and artifacts from the Holy Land, including the Isaiah Scroll, one of the Dead Sea Scrolls.  It is an informative look at 2,500 years of Biblical history.

 •   Find the location nearest you.  (The exhibit will be in: GA, MI, OH, TN, OK, MA, NC, VA, SC, AL, IL, IA, CA, UT, TX, NM, FL, MO, CO, MN, NJ, and Toronto.)

What a wonderful field trip either of these exhibits would make for your family, support group, or church group!
